When contractions get hard, don't fight! - Surrender to God's leading.
When a mother reaches the transition stage of labor, even with the best of coping skills, contractions feel overwhelming and way bigger than her. Some women lose their focus and search for an escape. This is when 2 things are in order: the Take Charge Routine and Surrender.
In the Take Charge Routine, a spouse or labor support team member gets close to the woman, so that she has to look at them. They take charge by reminding her how to breathe, how to move, and how to think about these sensations, and they remind her how close she is to seeing her baby. They mirror for her, "Breathe with me...," what to do till she has gained the mastery over her fears. Transition is about your mental game. If you resist or fight the contractions, they will surely beat you down. The only way to win is to surrender (or let go), something our Savior exemplified so well on the cross. Only when you receive the contractions and let them flow over you will you get through Transition. |
Remember that contractions are like strong waves. When transition hits, the contractions are back to back with little rest time. Listen to this Biblical labor affirmation devotional below while you practice your physical coping skills from class.
